Protocols
When referring to electronic products, the term 'protocol' refers to the method that these products communicate with each other. People use 'language' to communicate with each other; electronic products have a simplified 'language'. This language is termed a 'protocol'. Protocols can be referred to as 'open' and 'closed' . It is important to know what each means when comparing different types of systems.
Open Protocols
With analogue addressable fire-alarms systems, Logic Fire & Security are committed to open-protocol equipment, offering products from different manufacturers that communicate flawlessly with each other. This offers much greater flexibility and better value-for-money systems. Open-protocols allow independent companies to design bespoke systems that can be accessed for service by any bona-fide fire-alarm company. Generally speaking, open-protocol systems costs less to maintain, as you can choose any company to carry out the maintenance on these systems.
Closed Protocols
Closed-protocol equipment does limit the End Users choice of maintenance company. In the main, access to closed-protocol equipment is only permissible to the manufacturer's own engineers and closed-protocol equipment spares usually can be purchased only from that single manufacturer.
The open / closed protocol issue is more common when referring to fire alarms however, there are Intruder Alarms and Access Systems which come under the closed protocol banner. In summary you may install a closed protocol system for a lesser cost but be aware that you may then be tied to only one company to maintain and upgrade your system.
